This 4 credit, elective, Graduate level course equips students to understand the philosophy and benefits of wilderness experiences, with an emphasis in utilizing this context for unique ministry opportunities. 664 prepares students for wilderness trip leadership with experiental learning in the mountain context. Outside of the field experiences we will explore program leadership topics such as: risk management, working with land management entities, environmental ethics, and the changing attitudes toward wild places throughout American history.
Voice of Wildernessis a Christian backpacking and retreat center specializing in spiritual refreshment, educational adventures, and physical challenges. Voice of Wilderness was founded by Chet & Bobbie Russell in 1973 and is currently based out of Mountain Light Lodge, located in the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado.
