You will be responsible for your own flight arrangements to Anchorage. Plan to arrive on June 24th. We will lodge that evening on the beautiful campus of the University of Alaska. The next day we will take a spectacular journey to the remote mountain town of McCarthy and the heart of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Along the way we will see the rugged mountains and glaciers. ice capped volcanoes and an abundance of wildlife. We will spend the night in a rustic backpacker hotel in the quaint bush community of McCarthy, waking up the next day refreshed and ready for adventure.
Flight see of the Kennecott Valley
The Kennecott Valley awaits...our first exploration will be by air on a 35 minute flight overseeing the Kennecott Valley. This is truly one of the most spectacular areas of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Our experienced bush pilot knows just how to show off the massive snow covered peaks and striped glaciers in what is known as North America's "Mountain Kingdom".
Mining Town
After returning to the air strip, we will grab our backpacks and head to the copper mining town of Kennecott. for a fascinating tour of this historic town.
Hiking and exploring the Root Glacier
We will then continue our journey along a trail that leads us to base camp at the toe of the massive Root Glacier. After learning about the equipment and techniques necessary to enjoy this icy playground we will spend the next two days exploring the Root Glacier and the sensational areas along its edge. 16.390 foot Mt. Blackburn and the mile-high Stairway Icefall dominate the area, commonly decorated with amazing sculpted ice, azure pools, roaring moulins and ice caves. The next day we will head back to McCarthy.
Rafting the Kennecott-Nizina-Chitna River System
With the backpacker hotel again serving as our resting place. we will arise early the next morning and trade in our hiking boots for rubber boots and paddles and take to the river in a raft. This 3-day float begins on the Kennecott River which takes us through its confluence with the Nizina River on down to the Chitna River and its confluence with the mighty Copper River.
You'll pass through spectacular steep-walled canyons and Into some of the most pristine wilderness left in the world today. Moose, eagles, beavers, bears and much more make their home here, so you will need to keep that camera handy. Your guides know the best river-side camps and are experts at preparing gourmet camp cuisine. Our float will conclude at the take-out on the Copper River. where we will meet our van for the ride back to Anchorage.
Fishing for Salmon on the Kenai Penninsula
Our spectacular adventure will culminate with three days of touring and fishing on the world famous Kenai Peninsula. Our base will be Captain Bligh's Beaver Creek Lodge on the banks of the Kenai River. The next two days we will have a choice of fishing with Captan Blighs guides or going it on our own. Fishing the magnificent Kenai River and other streams and rivers for sockeye salmon, trout and the grand daddy of them all, Alaska's king salmon, is an ultimate fishing opportunity.
